Cairo city

Sitting on the River Nile, Cairo has a heady and humid desert climate. It is a truly magnificent city with obvious influences from the Pharaohs, Greeks and the Romans. After you land, pick up a taxi, bus or microbus from the airport. The Metro is also recommended for a fast and efficient way of getting around the city but be aware though that it can get very crowded during rush hour. (Note that the fourth and fifth cars are reserved for women only, although women can ride in any car.)

Booking a place to stay in Cairo

Book a room at the excellent Four Seasons Hotel Cairo at Nile Plaza, where the 5-star facilities ensure that your stay is a pleasurable one. Overlooking the Nile, the views are truly stunning and make an idyllic backdrop for a romantic getaway. Perfect for business travellers and tourists alike, the Hotel Longchamps is a wallet-friendly choice, located in the safe Zamalek area of the city. Basic but charming, this 3-star residence has great service and spacious rooms.

What not to miss

You can't come to Cairo without visiting Giza. Explore the pyramids and the spectacular Sphinx, the largest monolith statue in the world. A taxi from the centre of Cairo (£15) is probably the easiest way to get to Giza, although mini and micro buses do run frequent tours (costing around 25 pt) and don't forget to ride a camel while you're there.

A taste of Cairo

Dine at the sleek and modern Sabaya restaurant for authentic Lebanese cuisine. Try the mezze, especially the tasty kibbeh nayye. And you simply must taste the freshly-made delicacy, Fateer. With either sweet or savoury fillings, you can choose from honey, banana, sugar, minced beef, cheese or tuna.

With the imposing Cairo Tower grandly presiding over the city, this city has so many wonderful sights, you won't want to leave. For a truly memorable break book Cairo with bmi now - we guarantee that you'll have the time of your life.
