Getting away from it all

Transport from the airport to central Damascus is quick and efficient. Use Al-Karnak, the state bus company, to get to the Baramkeh bus terminal for around 25S£. Taxis are waiting to whisk you to your destination but be on guard for unofficial vehicles. It costs around 800S£ and is slightly more expensive at night. And make sure you take advantage of the extremely cheap duty-free goods while you're in the airport.

The maze of narrow alleyways gives the centre of this ancient city a distinctly medieval aura. Walking is recommended, although buses and taxis are plentiful. Buses are extremely cheap but note that there are no scheduled stops; just indicate to the driver when you want to get off. Taxis are a safe choice (choose Star Taxi) and drivers expect a tip.

Staying in Syria

Budget travellers: consider staying at the new Hotel Al-Ghazal. With helpful staff and clean rooms it's a good choice if your finances are limited.

If you‘re on business or fancy a more luxurious base then book a room at the Cham Hotel. As one of the largest business class hotels in the city, it has everything you need for a stress-free vacation.

Out and about

Visit the Souq al-Hamidiyya, a pretty and aromatic shopping area filled with gifts such as silk scarves and leather goods. The wonderful Umayyad mosque contains the grave of John the Baptist and is one of the few Islamic mosques that tourists are allowed to view (note that women are asked to cover their hair, arms and legs).

Eating out

Try Old Damascus. Beit Jabri is authentic and very popular with tourists or try Al-Khawali for delicious, quality food. Hooka cafes are very popular and offer a huge variety of flavoured tobacco. For a quick snack, pick up a falafel sandwich or a manakeesh and in the evening make sure you take the short walk to Midan, just south of Old Damascus. The main street, Jazmatiya, is best seen at night (closing around 3am) and is very safe.
