Travelling to and around the city

Imam Khomeini International Airport is located about 19 miles south of the city centre, about an hour's journey in a taxi (approx RLS 100,000). Taxis are an inexpensive way to travel and the drivers have excellent local knowledge but do agree your fare before you start your journey. Buses are a cheaper alternative although can be extremely crowded. If you're planning to drive during your stay then do take care, traffic is a real problem and the maze of city streets can be confusing. The congestion makes the roads extremely hazardous, so make sure you wear a seat belt at all times.

Staying in Tehran

If you're on a budget, stay at the Hotel Naderi on Djomhouri Ave. Well located and close to the metro it's a good choice if you're hitting the tourist spots. For a more luxurious accommodation, look no further than the relatively new Escan Hotel on Enghelab Ave. It's small but has everything you need for a relaxing stay.

Sites to see

Don't miss the National Jewels Treasury, which houses the most expensive collection of jewels in the world, including the largest pink diamond on the planet. Or, if you're feeling energetic, just 43 miles north of Tehran (about a 2 hour drive) you'll find the Alborz Mountains, home to the Dizin Ski Resort. An unlikely tourist attraction, it's famous for its excellent snow and is definitely worth a visit if you're into skiing or snowboarding.

A taste for something special

For a spot of fine dining, book a table at the hip and trendy Monsoon restaurant. Popular with young Iranians, the décor is clean and modern, creating a relaxed, ambient atmosphere. Serving typically Asian cuisine, try the Buddha's Feast or the delicious Sushi. While it's not cheap, it is perfect for a romantic treat. For a delicious and inexpensive snack make sure you pick up a tasty falafel from the stalls close to the bazaar during your stay.
